When Do the Clocks Go Back? Don’t Get Caught Out This October!

It’s that time of year again! The darker evenings are creeping in, the temperatures are dropping, and we’re all looking forward to that extra hour in bed.

But while an extra hour of sleep sounds great, the clocks changing can sometimes cause confusion, particularly when it comes to getting to work on time!

At Contract Personnel, we know how important it is to be in the right place at the right time, whether you’re working a temporary shift, starting a new job or heading into the office for your usual Monday morning.

So, before you enjoy that extra hour under the duvet, here’s everything you need to know about the clocks going back and our top tips to make sure you’re not caught out!

When Do the Clocks Go Back in 2026?

In the UK, the clocks go back one hour on Sunday 25th October 2026, at 2:00am, when British Summer Time (BST) officially ends and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) begins.

This means that when the clock strikes 2:00am, it will go back to 1:00am.

The good news? An extra hour in bed!

The not-so-good news? Darker evenings, colder mornings and the occasional Monday morning mix-up!

Most smartphones and digital devices will update automatically, but it’s worth checking your alarm clocks, car clocks and any other devices that need changing manually.

Top Tips for Temporary Workers

If you’re working through Contract Personnel on a temporary assignment, particularly in industries such as manufacturing, warehousing, logistics or production, a little preparation can make all the difference.

  1. Double-check your shift times

If you’re scheduled to work over the weekend, particularly during the early hours of Sunday morning, make sure you know exactly when your shift starts and finishes.

If you’re working overnight when the clocks change, your shift could potentially be an hour longer than usual. Check with your supervisor or recruitment consultant how this will affect your hours and pay.

  1. Set your alarms correctly

Most mobile phones change automatically, but it’s always worth checking your settings. Nobody wants to arrive an hour early for a 6:00am shift, especially when they could have enjoyed an extra hour in bed!

  1. Check your transport arrangements

If you rely on public transport or share lifts with colleagues, make sure everyone is working to the correct time.

Bus and train schedules can be affected by the clock change, particularly overnight services, so check your journey in advance.

  1. Keep your recruitment consultant informed

If you’re unsure about your shift pattern or have any concerns about your working hours, get in touch with your Contract Personnel consultant.

We’re here to help make sure everything runs smoothly.

Top Tips for Permanent Workers

For those in permanent positions, the clock change might seem like a small detail, but it can still throw your usual routine off track.

  1. Prepare for Monday morning

Sunday might bring an extra hour in bed, but your body clock doesn’t always adjust straight away.

Try to stick to your normal sleeping routine so you’re feeling refreshed and ready for the working week.

  1. Plan for darker commutes

With the clocks going back, the evenings will start getting darker earlier.

If you drive, cycle or walk to work, take extra care during your commute. Check your vehicle lights, wear reflective clothing where appropriate and allow extra time for your journey.

  1. Check your meetings and appointments

Most digital calendars will automatically adjust, but it’s worth checking any meetings, interviews or appointments you’ve scheduled, particularly if you’re working with colleagues or clients overseas.

  1. Make the most of your extra hour

Why not use that extra hour to get organised for the week ahead?

Whether it’s preparing your lunches, planning your commute or simply enjoying a well-deserved lie-in, a little preparation can help Monday morning feel much easier.

Working a Night Shift? Here’s What You Need to Know

For anyone working overnight on Saturday 24th October into Sunday 25th October, the clocks changing can be particularly important.

Because the clocks move backwards, you could end up working an additional hour depending on your shift pattern.

Your pay for that additional hour will depend on your contract and your employer’s arrangements, so it’s important to clarify this beforehand.

Our advice: If you’re working a night shift, speak to your supervisor or Contract Personnel consultant before the weekend to confirm your finishing time, recorded hours and pay arrangements.
