Preparing for a Driving Job Interview – Candidate Guide

Whether you have an interview lined up or you’re planning for the future, it’s always a good idea to be well prepared for an interview and that’s no different for a driving job. This is to make sure that you are able to present your best self and increases the likelihood of becoming a successful candidate.

Do Your Research

You may have read the job description but have you looked into the company or recruiter further? What are their values? What is their history? What separates them from their competitors? This research will give you a good overview of what the recruiter is looking for and should prepare you for questions you may be asked in your interview. Additionally this research will help you decide if you are a good candidate for the job and how suitable the position is. Do you have the driving certifications they require? Do you have the experience they are requesting? Are you interested in what they have to offer? You may find that actually the job is not for you and you may be better off elsewhere.

Prepare Your Answers

You will almost certainly be asked to answer some competency based questions to gauge how qualified or suitable you are for a particular position. These questions require you to give answers based on previous experience and how you have behaved in certain situations. You may be asked to describe, discuss and give examples of previous experience both in and out of the workplace environment. Examples of these may be: give an example of when you worked well as part of a team, describe a situation in which you had to work under pressure and tell me about a time you demonstrated leadership qualities. Think of these as a chance to show off and demonstrate both your passion, your knowledge and your suitability.

Generic Questions

Don’t fall at the final hurdle by leaving yourself vulnerable to generic commonly asked job interview questions.

Here are a few examples you may wish to prepare for:

What do you know about our company? – This is where your previous research may come in handy, demonstrate your knowledge.
Why did you apply for this position? – Try and make your answer company specific, look at what they offer that their competitors don’t, but also demonstrate your passion for the driving industry.
What made you leave your current position? – Be careful not to speak ill of any previous employers as this will reflect badly upon you. Instead express your desire for new challenges and opportunities.
What were your previous roles and responsibilities? – Think of tasks which demonstrate your suitability and experience in relation to the position you are applying for. For example, you may have prior experience driving the same or a similar vehicle model, which could give you an advantage over other applicants.
Describe yourself in so many words? / How would your friends describe you? Think of answers to both of these so that you’re not left floundering on the day.
What are your strengths and weaknesses? – Don’t just focus on your strengths, you may also be asked to provide a weakness and to discuss how you are working to overcome it.
Why do you think you are suitable for this position? / What are your relevant skills? – Think of any certifications, experience, passion or knowledge you may have which relates to the job you are applying for.
Do you prefer to work alone or as part of a team? – Think about the team work involved in the position before you answer this, in other words answer tactically but honestly.
How do you cope in high pressure environments? – Try preparing an example which supports your answer.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? – This questions measures of your ambition so think about it and have an answer ready.

Dress Appropriately

Just because you’re not applying for a 9-5 office job doesn’t mean you should leave your suit and tie at home. Even a driving candidate’s presentation can often be the deciding factor if they’re evenly experienced.
