Helder’s Story – A Remarkable Turnaround

When Helder Nunes knocked on the door at Contract Personnel in Norwich last year October, he was in a desperate situation. He was homeless, had no money, had no job, and was in urgent need of help and support to get his life back on track.

The 45-year-old had arrived in Norwich from London – after being homeless in the capital for over a year. He had previously lived in Suffolk & Great Yarmouth, after arriving in the UK 2 years ago. Before moving back to Norfolk, Helder managed to speak to someone in a similar situation to his, who suggested him to move to Norwich and seek a better future there.

Helder was recommended to pay a visit to Contract Personnel – one of East Anglia’s largest independent recruitment agencies. It was a decision that would change his life forever.

Helder, who was born in Portugal, was greeted by Senior Industrial Recruitment Consultant – Valentina Kushmintseva.

“When Helder arrived in the office, he explained his situation to me and the team and I knew straight away – I needed and wanted to help him,” Valentina said.
“Despite the fact he was homeless and was in an incredibly vulnerable position and in need of help, he showed a real willingness to work and get his life back on track.”

Valentina arranged for Helder to have a hot drink and food in the office, whilst she made many calls reaching out to the local authorities and various organisations for support, but despite initial hope, unfortunately none was available at the time. Valentina brought this to the attention of the Senior Management Team at Contract Personnel, who all agreed on going the extra mile to help Helder and managed to find and pay for a hotel room for a week, to ensure he was safe.

And they didn’t stop there!

Contract Personnel and their team of recruitment experts found Helder a job at a multi award-winning manufacturer in Lenwade – with transport provided for him from their office.

“I really appreciate all the help that I have been given”, said Helder. “It means a lot to me and I am truly grateful.”

The next stage of the remarkable story saw Valentina speak with her landlord and after some productive discussions, they managed to find Helder some accommodation – with his new job providing him with the income required to pay for his rent. Valentina rallied round asking colleagues to donate any towels, bedding and food to ensure he had the basic household essentials, that most people take for granted.

Helder is working for Contract Personnel still to this day and through the compassion and support the team have provided him, he has turned his life around. He is now saving money to rent a place on his own – as he is currently house sharing.

A remarkable story of a person, who despite being in quite a desperate situation, was determined to help himself and came to the right place at the right time!
